Botanical Bohemia meets Victoriana Luxury - Decadent Florals, Earthy Hues and  Masses of Drama!

15/1/2021

Picture
1) What was the inspiration for this shoot?
The beautifully romantic story of elopement, inspired this team to create a dramatic story entirely different from the usual. With a heavy nod towards the drama and mood of the Victorian era including a mix of simple elegant and luxurious fine details to the heavy use of decadent dried foliage displays. All with a heavy inspiration of William Morris’ theatrical home décor work who was once quoted as saying ‘There is no excuse for doing anything which is not strikingly beautiful’.
Picture
2) How would you describe the theme and look?
Our one line for describing this shoot would be 'Botanical Bohemia meets Victoriana Luxury'.

An eclectic and dramatic mix of decedent detailing with a colour palette that echos the Victorian adoration for opulence and deep earthy hues and metallics. Contrasted against the soft relaxed feel of the bohemian bridal and groomsmen look with an edge of quirk. Any couple looking to be inspired on how to create atmosphere and a bit of drama through how they style their special day will for sure find this editorial content of great motivation to do their day their way!
3) How did you go about bringing your look to life through the details?
The place setting was shaped with wooden charger plates and set off with the metallic gold cutlery, echoing the bespoke table number brass frames and the mustard tinted cut glass glassware. Finally the table was completed with hand made corresponding menu and place name cards for each guest, featuring dried eucalyptus leaves and gold wax seals.
Picture

Picture
The wedding cake continued the theatrical boho theme, featuring a heavy macramé fringing, elegantly and dramatically draping towards the floor. The platted cord framed the angular tiered cake structure, which was covered with a lavish metallic coating designed to catch the eye. Again, a detailing of striking dried flowers and structured palms completed the look.
As guests would arrive at the 18th Century Potting Shed they would are greeted by a quirky vintage easel that housed the handmade pyrography welcome sign, draped in dried greenery garlands and bleached palms to give guests a hint of what is to come with the venue décor inside.
Picture
Picture
The bride is wearing a bespoke peasant sleeved silk chiffon gown that oozes elegance and romance. Her hair and makeup accentuates the alluring amorousness of the look, further complemented by a collection of handmade and ethically sourced jewellery pieces. The handmade floral headband of earthy hues that creates that additional drama and uniquely fashion forward bridal look that you just don’t want to stop starring at.
Picture
The second bridal look showcases when the newly married couple enter the gardens for their first moments as man and wife. A full length veil and halo of dried florals and foliage adorn the wide brim on her fedora hat, instantly creating a second stunning bridal look in a simple and stylish way.

Picture
Picture
The grooms classic look has an edge of quirk and individualism with his dicky bow tie and accompanying braces showing off his personality. Finished off with a set of Fairtrade silver rutile quartz handmade cufflinks, and white gold wedding band.
Picture
4) What palette did you choose to work with and why?
The strong yet simple colour palette of olive greens, plums and mustard hues are offset by the beautifully simple yet detailed outfits for the couple. The cinematic storytelling and intentional use of shadow and muted, deep coloured palette creates a dramatic atmosphere to showcase the beautiful objects and enables focus on their intense luxury.
Picture
Picture
5) How did you choose the location, and what did it add to the ambience of the shoot?
The whole editorial shoot was set in the enchanting 16th century Midelney Manor, hidden in the heart of the Somerset Levels and surrounded by 400 acres of farm and woodland. With magical walled gardens, flower beds and orchard trees surrounding the imposing barn with old stonework and ancient beams seemed like the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's imagination and perfect for holding a magical wedding ceremony.
Picture
The shoot tells the story of a couple that have disappeared to elope, the Bride to be found this enchanting place in the heart of Somerset to share their vows and marry one another, with only a couple of guests to witness their marriage. The Groom receives an invite the night before from his beloved, it simply tells him when and where to be and that his Bride will be waiting.
Picture
Picture
Picture
6) Which flowers did you use and how did they contribute to the look?
With the resurgence of dried florals and foliage across the floral wedding scene, they have been featured heavily in a relaxed and bountiful way with the theme running right through the entire styling of the wedding. From the luxurious wedding invites with their hand decorated floral artwork, vellum wrap and wax seals through to the decadent floral table scape centre pieces. All of which feature Avalanche Peach Roses, Chrysanthemum Paladov Dark, Jana Spray Roses with bleached palms and pampas grass adding structure and depth.
Picture
7) What do you think are the standout elements of this shoot/your personal favourite details, and why?
With my love for florals, the stand out elements for me are firstly, the dried botanical theme running through the whole shoot. From the dramatic macrame backdrop with draping dried eucalyptus, palms and pampas grass, to the sumptuous guest tablescape centre pieces, to the bridal crown and bouquet and groomsmen buttonholes, through to the wedding cake and the wedding stationery. I feel this golden thread of styling pulls the whole shoot together into a cohesive piece of theatrical artwork. Something which prospective bride and grooms can get inspired and excited by to implement themselves through their own wedding day styling.
Picture
Picture
The second element of the shoot that I am in LOVE with is the dark and dramatic photography style used throughout the shoot came from our desire to create a cinematic feel. The most important aspect of storytelling is the ability to make the viewer want to see more, showing just enough to make them eager to see what else is coming. With careful use of light, we bring characters and objects into focus whilst details remain in the shadows, just visible enough to create curiosity about what part of the story comes next. Our intentional framing of the scenes is taken straight from the movies: the ultimate medium for telling stories of love and passion.

What is Causing the Resurgence of The 2020s Bohemian?

3/12/2020

Picture
2020 has been a bit of a year hasn’t it!! If you take a snap shot of this one single year, it really paints a picture of how we as a global society are currently fairing.

Of course, Coronavirus has very much dominated our lives and the subsequent fall out from this. With the lockdowns and contact restrictions we have faced, and seeing how this has impacted us culturally as a nation, as well as economically with the strain on many industries that were previously thriving. Not to mention the additional pressure on our NHS and care sector and loosing many loved one.
Picture
However, with all the sacrifice and pain, there has also come a resurgence of love and respect for our NHS workers and key workers, we have learned how to take a pause from the rat race life, restock and re-clarify what is most important to use as human beings.
As well as this, other activities are also giving being a litmus test for how things are changing. Prince Harry and Megan Markle officially stepped down from their duties in the Royal Family, choosing a more private and authentic way of life for them and their family.
Picture
cosmopolitan.com
The racial tensions over police brutality spilled over into global protests that followed the killing of George Floyd. A 46 year old black man in Minnesota while being arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill on 25th May 2020. Society speaking out, taking a stand and demonstrating their anger and upset around how systematic racism is still, after so many years, detrimentally affecting the lives of people of colour today.
Picture
@clay.banks
Out of this coming the Anti-Racism Movement, where acknowledging personal privileges, confronting acts of racial discrimination and working to change personal racial biases has become priority to start to move forward.
Sir David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet, was also released this year, which is a film that looks back over the 93 year olds career, and issues a stark climate emergency warning. It outlines the devastation that we as humans have caused over his lifetime and what we can expect to happen to our world if we don’t act now.
Picture

Picture
telegraph.co.cuk
Backing up all that was discussed in the film was the reality check that took place across Australia with their devastating bush fires caused by record temperatures and months of severe drought, that swept through New South Wales and Victoria and other areas, killing 1 billion animals
So much has happened in this one year alone, I feel that it is impossible to have not been profoundly affected by these incidents. For many, this year has mustered up a new found energy and passion to make a change for the better today and to create a life where they are living authentically, sustainably and speaking out about inequalities that still exist.
But this isn’t the first time in history a segment of society has felt like this. The term Bohemian, is very much interlinked with being unconventional, making a stand and living an authentic life, and so I very much feel something exciting is happening right now with the creation of The 2020s Bohemian.
A Whistle Stop Tour of Bohemian Culture History
The Origins
‘The Bohemians’ counterculture (a way of life different to the norm) is thought to have originated in France in the 18th Century (1700-1800s) at the end of the French Revolution.
Picture
Creatives and artists were forced into poverty due to social and economic difficulties, of which impacted the clothes they wore and how they were perceived by French society at the time.
French creatives were compared to nomadic gypsies that frequented France in that era, due to their similar dress attire. The travelling community that they were associated with had their origins in Eastern Europe (The Czech Republic and Slovakia) in a then region called ‘Bohemia’.
Picture
Picture
Multicultural Influences & The Intrinsic Link to Nature
This eclectic style of dress and way of life was later adopted and developed by intellectuals from the Romanticism movement in the 19th Century.
Romantics created a close connection with nature, as they believed humans were born pure, but society corrupted them. Nature therefore became a symbol of something pure and almost spiritual within their lives.
Picture
Picture
Flowing gowns were worn and garments that took inspiration from many cultures from across the world, like headdresses from the Middle East to kimonos from Eastern Asia.
This forward thinking culture becomes known as ‘Bohemian’ as at the time, this approach to life was against the majority. Along with the distinctive style of dress, the term also represented a whole subculture of unconventional artistic types, living their life against the ‘norm’, and being authentic to their ingenuity, spirituality, and creativity.
Picture
The 1960’s Resurgence
The Bohemian Counterculture had a major resurgence in the 1960s and 70s with the hippie movement across the America and the western world. This time the ethos of free thinking and challenging social norms, from rejecting established institutions, to criticising middle class values and championing sexual liberation.
Picture
Picture
This was also demonstrated fiercely through anti-war protests about the Vietnam War, where the famous slogan ‘Make Love, Not War’ made its debut. Their approach to life was linked closely to spirituality, and taking things back to nature. From the food they ate, to living together in communes, to natural childbirth approaches and a love for nature and each other as human beings.
Their impact on society around speaking up for what you feel is right, also brought about the start of the ‘Equal Rights for Women’ Movement throughout the 1960’s. This impacted many things like, enforcement of laws banning discrimination; maternity leave rights, childcare nurseries that could enable mothers to work; tax deductions for childcare expenses; equal and unsegregated education and equal job training opportunities for women from deprived communities. The other elements that stirred massive controversy where greater access to contraception and abortion.
Picture
The Bohemian Inspired Wedding
Looking back at the origins of the Bohemian Movement and the positive impact it later had on society by speaking out. It totally makes sense as to why we are now seeing this ethos and distinctive wedding style take centre stage across our wedding industry. It is not only the appeal of the beautiful bohemian style of dress, venue styling, floral design and type of outdoorsy wedding that couples are attracted to. I think it is more than that.
Picture
www.jamiedennyphotography.com www.parkerandpeonyflowers.com
I think my generation are finally waking up to the harm and destruction that is taking place in our world, especially from the point of view of the racial inequalities that are still very much present in 2020. We are waking up to the damage and devastation we have caused and are still causing our environment, of which if we do not act there will be irreparable damage that cannot be undone. We are waking up to the importance of authenticity, and being allowed to live our lives without judgement or prejudice from others, to be able to find true our own happiness and fulfilment.
Picture
The 2020s Bohemian
I think there is a new wave of Bohemian for the 2020s that will be making choices that align with repairing the damage that previous generations have made to our world and society. This reignited Bohemian culture will undoubtedly be reflected in all aspects of their lives, including when they choose to ‘get wed’ to the one they love.
Their wedding will be conducted in their own unique way and not following convention. They will be guided by what is truly authentic to them, standing up for what they believe in and what they really want. The 2020s Bohemian, will make decisions that does not impact their environment or ecosystem, and they will create a day that aligns with their spirituality as a couple.

This is why I feel the boho inspired wedding are very much here to stay and will only grow and dominate the wedding industry as millennials became of age, and want to get married to the person they love over the next 10 years.

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it!

A FairytaleUnder the Trees - A story of a Barefoot  Bride and Her  True Love.

Picture
Deep in the heart of Cornwall, under the magical canopy of Underpine Woods, an intimate fairytale woodland wedding shoot took place, headed up by Sara from Peony and Lace Weddings.

Initially, the editorial shoot was conceived to gain images of the woodlands as a new wedding venue. Beth (Underpine Woods owner) and Cassie (Bude Blooms) wanted to capture the beauty and wonder of the venue, so enlisted Sara at Peony & Lace Weddings to come on board to style and plan the shoot.

Sara explained, "The first time I visited the woodlands I was in awe of its natural beauty. 27 expansive acres of spruce trees, a babbling river and the endless possibility of styling".

Sara wanted to highlight the natural beauty of the woodlands, so she used a colour palette of bottle green, metallic gold and white. Mixing festoon lighting, candles and macrame pieces, the team styled the woodlands to create a rustic, bohemian fairytale affair.
Picture

Picture
Venue – Underpine Woods, Bude, Cornwall.
Underpine Woods is a 27 Acre sustainably managed ex-plantation woodland just outside of Bude in Cornwall. Originally planted in the 1970’s the woods as a plantation crop, it is now being transformed by Beth and Sam the owners, into a beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.
Picture
The magical environment of Underpine Woods is a delight to the senses. With its babbling brook, steep hills, wonderfully straight rows of thousands towering coniferous trees, dotted with some broadleaf giants, you could be mistaken for landing in a woodland fairytale.
The woods now host weddings, as well as being responsibly managed as a traditional woodland, making charcoal, firewood and traditional crafts to maintain and improve the nature and biodiversity of the whole space.
Picture
Picture
Event Hire – Knot Again Jill
Having worked with Jill from Knot Again Jill on previous editorial shoots, Sara knew that the woodland setting would be ideal to use Jill’s ‘Crystal’ macrame hanging on a copper arch to create a ‘ceremony’ backdrop.
Picture
Picture
Macrame jars filled with candles, perched on tree stumps were used as framing for the cake table, along with a macrame hanging between the trees creating an entrance focal point.
Picture
Picture
Bridal Outfit – Evolved Bridal

The wedding dress was supplied by Lynsey of Evolved Bridal. Evolved Bridal offers 'Nothing Ordinary', and handpicks dresses that represent trendy, alternative styles that embrace individuality to represent the modern bride.

As soon as the details and the concept of the shoot started coming together, Sara knew that the dress by designer White April from Evolved Bridal, was the perfect fit for this enchanting shoot.
A romantic, yet modern boho dress with simple lines, a wonderfully plunging deep V front and back and thigh high split to the front of the skirt.
Veil - Rebecca Anne Designs
To finish the look, Rebecca, from Rebecca Anne Designs provided one of her beautiful veils. “To complement the venue, I felt a veil with embroidered wildflowers would perfectly suit the wilderness of the surroundings and the locally grown flowers being used for the shoot.”
Picture
Picture
Jewellery – Bish Bosh Becca
As soon as the dress was secured, it was straight over to Sarah Jane at Bish Bosh Becca for the jewellery.  “It’s always a pleasure to work with Sara and when she mentioned a magical woodland shoot I was hooked. I am at my most creative when designing jewellery for shoots, just like a real wedding I have to be aware of the theme and the dress".
For this shoot Sarah Jane created a Y drop necklace in gold chain with white pearls. The dress had a wonderful deep v back and front so she added a back drop attachment to the necklace and teamed it with some matching long pearl chain earrings from Bish Bosh Becca’s new Stella range. The finishing touch was a real statement pearl and gold cuff bracelet that snaked up and round our beautiful bride’s wrist.
The Celebrant Ceremony - Unique Ceremonies

Nixie James Scott of Unique Ceremonies, provided a hand fasting ceremony for the shoot. Nixie has been known in the past to remark that she can marry couples anywhere, including up a tree. Of course, it was this comment that led to her being asked to join the team!
Picture
Unfortunately, spruce trees don’t make for easy climbing so we were unable to test Nixie’s theory. Nixie will co-create with the couple a ceremony which wholly reflects their personalities and beliefs.
The ceremony was such a beautiful and moving affair that it led our model Bekki to cry tears of pure joy and happiness.
Wedding Rings – Eco Wood Rings

As the woodland is an eco friendly wedding venue, who better to partner up with than Eco Wood Rings for the wedding bands. For Bekki’s ring, Steve provided a ring made from oak with an inlay of white gold shavings and diamond dust. For Brad’s band, a strong and simplistic band of oak was supplied.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Hair/ MUA – Toni Gogola Wedding Hair
For a free spirited, boho hairstyle, the obvious addition to the team was Toni Gogola at Toni Gogola Wedding Hair. “I specialise in laid back natural braided hairstyles so when I was asked to be involved with the woodland shoot I was so excited! Bekki has the most gorgeous striking purple hair and I knew exactly how I wanted it to look. I decided soft waves with a twisted top section knowing it would fit perfectly amongst the stunning backdrop of Underpine Woods.”
A floral crown made by Cassie, Bude Blooms finished off Bekki’s hair look. The white flowers popping against Bekki’s fabulous purple hair.
Due to the Covid-19 restrictions that were in place at the time of the shoot, we were unable to have a MUA apply makeup to Bekki our model. Bekki did her makeup whilst being talked through different tips by Toni.
Cake – Claires Sweet Temptations Claire’s cakes never fail to delight. The mood board inspiration was a mixture of cakes iced with green and gold, but with a desire to incorporate flowers given the ‘nature’ feel to the shoot.
Picture
“For the cake I took inspiration from the mood board, which is often the starting point for wedding cakes. And also the flowers being used, and the colour scheme. I knew there needed to be some drama too, as it’s such a beautiful and dramatic venue.”
Picture
Florals – Bude Blooms
Bude Blooms was established in 2017 by Cassie and is based in the field next to Underpine Woods.  All the flowers used for the shoot were grown locally by Cassie and the greenery was a mix of the foliage grown in Cassie’s fields and the foliage growing in the woodlands.
“I wanted the florals to reflect the calm and pure nature of the woodland setting whilst also standing out from the back drop leading us to choose white as a base colour. They shone bright on a rainy day. Working with seasonal flowers and foliage I had a mix of roses, gladioli, nigella and zinnia to name a few. A perfect mix for end of summer.”
Picture
Tablescape Styling – Peony & Lace Weddings
Working with the colour palette, Sara decided on classic white plates sat on gold chargers along with gold cutlery. A green napkin added the touch of colour against the white dinner plate.
Picture
Picture
“When I first saw the woodlands with Cassie and Beth, I knew straight away that a table runner of greenery accented with white flowers would be the perfect décor for the table. Candles always feature in my work, so the addition of white glass votives and white tapered candles in gold holders was a must to accompany the foliage.”
In keeping with the surroundings, the table was formed out of wooden planks that had been milled from trees that were felled in the woodlands sat upon tree stumps. The seating was tree stumps topped with white cushions for that extra pop of colour.
Picture
Stationery – Boo Lou Lew Design

Beth is not only the owner of the woodlands, she runs Boo Lou Lew Design. The stationary she created was inspired by the idea that any couple can create something completely unique, beautiful and sustainable whilst supporting local artists and having fun too!

Beth carved a custom stamp and combined it with an online calligraphy course and beginners set from the wonderful Langham Calligraphy and a choice from a wide range of beautiful ethical papers from Torn Edge Paper. Delicate, hand crafted gold edging adorned the invites.
Couples can visit Beth’s  beautiful studio in North Cornwall for a special day of stationery making complete with nibbles and good coffee. Beth shares her supplies, tools and experience to make their ideas into something beautiful!
Picture

Photography – Moon Gazey Hare

Lucy at Moon Gazey Hare’s photography style was exactly the right feel for shooting in nature. Her eye for detail and for crafting the perfect shot, making the most of the natural light, ensured we created magic in the woodlands.
Picture
Videography - Katherine and Her Camera
Katherine of Katherine and Her Camera was the videographer for the shoot. Her playful yet natural style fitted in with the team and the concept of the shoot. It was important to the team to have the shoot on video to capture the movement within the woodland.
Picture
Picture
Planning – Peony & Lace Weddings
The shoot was planned by Sara of Peony & Lace Weddings. “The first thing that struck me about Cassie and Beth’s initial idea was the lighting amongst the trees".
Sara knew in that moment that she would love to join the team, and coordinate the collaboration between all of the suppliers and manage the running of the day. The organisation of the day meant that even with an hour of down time due to biblical downpours, the team were still able to stick to our original planned timings.
Picture
Shoot Assistance - The Little Details
Sophie of The Little Details by Sophie, was the shoot assistant providing planning and styling assistance to Sara. Sophie’s attention to detail enabled Sara ensure the day ran smoothly and all elements of the shoot were captured.

Globetrotters Return Home to Organise Their Dream Industrial Boho COVID Friendly Wedding

28/10/2020

Picture
Matt and Jess’ (@mrandmrstetstall) insatiable love for travelling and exploring every corner of our world has been a theme throughout their relationship of three and a half years. Their most recent trip in 2019 saw them exploring the country of Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. Ending up island-hopping across the Philippines in March 2020 when COVID hit and consequently got stuck there for over 2 months when world travel came to a standstill.
Picture
Changing Plans
Their original plan was to end up in Australia to live indefinitely which they had worked really hard to achieve their permanent residency for. But with Australian borders closed for the medium term, and most other countries in the region following suit.
They made the decision to head back home and stick out the rest of lockdown, and see what the world looked like in a few months. They also originally had plans to get married in Thailand in 2022 where close family and friends could join them for the celebrations on a white sandy beach with the sun on their faces. But being forced to come home and re-evaluate their life plans, they took the opportunity as the free spirits they are, and start planning their wedding for the same year!
Wedding Planning
Due to the world coming to a halt, it was rather tricky to get a confirmed slot with the Registry Office, but they persevered and finally got a confirmed date on 18th August 2020 from the registry office, to get married on the 26th September 2020 with only 5.5 weeks to prepare! But this didn’t phase Matt and Jess, they took it all in their stride and picked one wedding planning aspect off at a time and it all came together nicely!
Picture
Picture
The Budget
From the very moment I started working with Matt and Jess, planning their flowers and assisting with wedding planning. It was clear to me the emphasis was on bringing together close family and friends to celebrate the love they have for one another, and having a damn good time.
They had a strict budget of between £5-7k to stick to, and as Jess was used to taking control of the budgeting on their trips around the world, she had this covered. Each aspect of the day was itemised and Jess was clear on exactly what it costed and how she wanted the end result to look like.
The COVID Friendly Ceremony
Picture
Picture
They were lucky enough to get a slot with the Registrar at The Old Municipal Buildings, a stunning Grade II listed, Tudor Hall in the heart of Taunton, Somerset. The fabulous venue was then perfect for outdoor photos taken either on the grand staircase leading up to the hall, or on the Castle Green just behind to celebrate the newly wed couple.
The staff their were very organised and struck a good balance between abiding by clear COVID guidance and welcoming guests and completing the marriage ceremony with the happy vibes of the day.

Picture
The Dress
Picture

As soon as Matt and Jess decided they were going to tie the knot in the UK, Jess began her wedding dress search. However, being in the middle of the first UK lockdown, this proved rather challenging She was certain she didn’t want to attend a bridal boutique as they were not within the price range she wanted to spend, and therefore opted to search online.
Picture
Jess scoured every online bridal outlet there was, ordered several to try but they were not quite right. Time was ticking, so we sat down and decided to order a number of dresses to try, even ones that Jess wasn’t 100% on. Well, as soon as Jess put on her chosen dress from ASOS, she instantly knew this was the one, and I’m sure you can see why! With its kimono sleeves, fitted deep plunge neckline and elegant cut out back. Covered top to toe in delicate tiny sequins that captured the light beautifully, the dress was sure to be a showstopper and made Jess feel sensational on the morning of her wedding.
Picture
Grooms Attire
Being a Brummy, there was only one place that Matt wanted to go to choose his wedding day suit, Slaters in Birmingham. Matt opted for a beautifully fitted mid-grey 3 piece suit with fine white check detailing and a double breasted waistcoat. He chose an orange paisley tie and crisp white shirt to complete his look and accompany some of the rusty tones of the chosen florals, and felt totally ‘dapper’ in his suave outfit!
Picture
Picture
Parker & Peony Flowers
Flowers
From the very start of the planning process, Jess was clear on the type of floral look she wanted for her bridal bouquet and the venue styling. Very ‘desert boho’, with lots of pampas, other neutral coloured grasses as the backdrop, no greenery.
Decorated with white orchids as the main feature and then white and rusty coloured florals as an addition. So with my wedding florist hat on @parkerandpeony.flowers, I selected nude Quicksand roses, rusty coloured large head Toffee Roses, White Lisianthus, Bohemian Mocha Lisianthus and white Anthurium to accompany the Orchids and Pampas to complete the uber stylish look for our uber stylish bride.
Picture
Celebration Venue
Matt and Jess chose the super trendy venue The Red Brick Building in Glastonbury, Somerset to celebrate in style. The edgy industrial vibes of the building continue as you enter the old factory building, through to the Old Tannery Bar and Restaurant and into the celebration space. Once the home of a thriving sheepskin factory, the building is full of original features from its wooden floors, industrial metal beams and red brick façade.
Picture
The Red Brick Building was saved from demolition in 2008 by concerned local young people who had a vision for its future. Since then, it has been transformed by volunteers into a dynamic enterprise and community hub that specialises in ‘Industrial Boho’ weddings by partnering up with their in-house bar and restaurant, The Old Tannery.
The Food
I couldn't miss out mentioning the fabulous food from the special day beings as the couple are such foodies! They they wanted simple hearty food, where the guests would be full to the brim. So, working with staff from The Old Tannery Restaurant, they selected 2 options; the homemade burger and chips, with home made coleslaw or salmon, seasonal veg and mash, followed by sticky toffee pudding and ice cream. Later on in the evening guests were then treated to a bacon butty to keep bellies nice and full, my kind of grub!!
COVID Friendly Venue Styling
The large open plan celebration space was perfect to set up for a COVID friendly wedding where we wanted plenty of space to seat the wedding party of 27 guests.
Picture
The guests were seated on individual long tables in each of their ‘bubbles’. We decorated the centre of the tables with natural cheese cloth and covered them with masses of small clear jars and freestanding white candles. In each jar, we then placed 2-3 stems of the stunning florals and grasses to complete the look.
Picture
To surprise the newly wed couple, the Parker and Peony Flowers Team created a top table for just the 2 of them. The Bride and Groom’s Sweatheart Table was layered with flowing natural cheese cloth, full of their favourite blooms sat in more small jars. Behind them stood a tall copper frame backdrop with an explosion of pampas grass hanging from it. From which they could sit and both then enjoy the funsies of the afternoon whilst sat in their regal vintage peacock chairs.

The Details
Picture
I loved Matt and Jess' idea for their guest book, with an instant print camera, guests were able to take hilarious photos from the day and write their messages of love and naughtiness! for the newly wed couple.

They also had a beautiful frame with 2 very special nan's that weren't able to celebrate with them in person, but were definitely there in spirit.

For their cake, they opted for Crispy Creme Donuts all round, sat on a clear tiered cake stand, topped off with a white choc and rasberry sponge cake to complete the look, yummy!

Adjacent to the Red Brick Building, stands another fantastic structure, The Zig Zag Building. This industrial space was originally part of the sheepskin factory, making slippers, gloves and sheepskin coats, opened in 1934 by the Morland Factory family. Now privately owned, it has now been renovated to hold exhibitions, events and workshops over its 3 floors of panoramic views of Glastonbury area.
Picture
The light from the original metal framed windows and skylights, create a sensational space to take some unique wedding photos with the couples very talented Portrait, Commercial and Wedding Photographer Jamie Denny. Take a look at these beauties!

Why You Shouldn’t put Your Plans on Hold to Become Parents…

20/10/2020

Picture
Previous generations had a straightforward view on how life should run. ‘First comes Love, then comes Marriage, then comes Baby in a Golden Carriage’ as the rhyme goes. But, even when this was the aspiration historically, underneath many family facades, this approach to life didn’t always equal happiness. Here at The Boho Bride Guide I wanted to dedicate some time today to talking about this unwritten rule, that many couples currently planning their wedding feel an underlying pressure to follow.
Picture
In today’s UK society, we are lucky that the very definition of 'family' is evolving and is no longer the stereotypical husband, wife, and 2.4 children. The emphasis of ‘family’ is now around being a group of people that live together as a unit and no longer is prescriptive around who that may be with. So whether you are choosing not to have children and dedicate yourselves to each other and your fur babies, or whether you are 2 families coming together in the name of love to create a new family unit, as long as love is at the heart of the family it will flourish.
Picture
Through a survey completed for a recent Boho Bride Guide Podcast episode with Sally Jackson a Bridal Wellbeing Coach. A number of ‘Brides To Be’ that have postponed their wedding due to COVID were asked, how they have managed the situation, and how it has impacted them
The overwhelming response, was a feeling of massive guilt amongst brides. A feeling that they couldn’t speak out and be honest, about how gutted they are for having to postpone their wedding due to the global pandemic. When people were losing their lives and loved ones, they felt they couldn’t share how gutted and upset they were about having to delay their wedding celebrations. There were a number of reasons surrounding this feeling of distress, but one that stood out from the rest. This feeling was that they had to put their aspiration to become parents on hold until they tied the knot.
Picture
Flex Your 5 Year Plan
Now, having become a parent myself in the last few years, I cannot imagine how couples out there must be feeling right now that also want to follow that same journey. If they had their ‘5 year plan’ all set out before COVID; getting married this year, having a big blow out honeymoon and seeing the world a little more, and then looking to start their parenting journey following that. To then be faced with a world health crisis, lockdown, a wedding postponement and the reality of coming to terms with the fact you think you also need to delay your parent journey, must be a massive feeling of overwhelm.

If you are anything like me, the thought of flexing my 5 year plan fills me with absolute dread and instantly makes me feel out of control. But in these unprecedented (there’s that word again!) times, we need to take a pause and do some work around releasing the self inflicted pressure that we put on ourselves. And look at where we can make changes, and in some cases compromises, that will in the long term still achieve your long term plans. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always happen the way we envisaged it to, and we can’t plan everything all the time. And that’s totally ok!
Picture
Don’t Put Your Family Planning Off
If you are looking to start a family in the near future, and were waiting to get married first, there is one thing I want you to take away from reading this. That is, there is no right or wrong when it comes to living your own life.  Plans do change and if you and your partner feel ready to start your own family, in whatever guise that takes, then don’t delay on the premise that you think you “should” get married first. There are so many unknowns in life, especially whilst we are still dealing with Covid, and ESPECIALLY in the family planning arena.
Picture
My Parent Journey
For people that know me, they will relate to how much of a planner I am and how I am really driven by goals to reach and timescales to achieve within. I have always had a 5 year plan right from school age, and on the whole with a little flex, accomplished my life goals. This was until I then wanted to start a family with my hubby at the age of 28. This age was what I had always had in my head, I had reached a place in my career I wanted to get to, I had travelled the world as I had dreamed of, and we lived in our gorgeous home that was perfect for starting a family in. All my ducks were in a row and now I wanted to click my fingers and for our baby to arrive on schedule too! I very naively assumed that I would come off the pill and a couple of months later, I would fall pregnant and have my baby 9 months later with no issues what so ever.

Oh how wrong I was. Each month we were trying, I would be hopeful that ‘this is the month!’, with it only to hit me in the face that we weren’t pregnant and for us to wait another month to see if it would happen then. 6 months past, and then a year, with no joy, and I cannot believe quite how this journey massively impacted my mental health and wellbeing. It was the first time in my life that the one thing I wanted in my life, I couldn’t get for myself. I started experiencing panic attacks for the first time in my life and sleep issues and the whole baby making process became so so upsetting, on top of what was a busy and stressful life I led in the corporate world and developing houses with my hubby. We had said to ourselves in the Summer of 2017 if we hadn’t got pregnant by Christmas, we would begin the journey of seeking help with fertility. But after 2 years of trying and being off sick from work for a significant period of time, we were delighted to finally be pregnant in the September of 2017. And our beautiful first boy Parker was born in the following May.
Picture
So, at no point do I think that everyone will have the issues we have been through, and many of you reading this will have no problem at all when you decide the time is right for you to start a family. But for the 1 in 7 couples in the UK that will experience fertility problems, and of that 25% of fertility problems left unexplained (NHS website). The situation you currently find yourself in with holding out to starting a family due to your wedding being postponed is definitely worth re-thinking.

Take control of what you can control and do what is right for you both in this new Covid world. Whether you are pregnant when your new wedding date comes around, or whether you have a new member of the family to join in on your wedding photos. Either way you will create your own version of a perfect wedding day, and think of the stunning photos with your new family addition!

However your wedding day pans out, you will be able to declare the love you have for one another in front of friends and family, and celebrate in style surrounded by oodles of love, laughter and maybe even a new little life will come a join the party.

Take Care,

Love Jen x

The Venue, Westcott Barton
Nestled in a secluded picturesque valley in North Devon, a wedding at Westcott Barton will always inspire and enchant. Set within its own private estate of beautiful gardens, woodlands, lakes and meandering stream, Westcott offers a stunning venue for your bespoke wedding. Both the stunning Function Barn and Orangery overlooks the beautiful gardens, with exclusive use of the entire venue, as well as accommodation for guests on site within the Grade ll listed Devon Longhouse.
The Dress from Always & Forever Bridal, Bideford.
The Bridal look and style was brought to life by the ‘Prudence‘ wedding gown from Bianco Evento, and supplied by award winning boutique, Always & Forever Bridal.

It was the perfect gown for the Autumn Love Shoot, featuring delicate polka dot lace sleeves, a sheer lace bodice and a floaty tulle skirt. The hint of sheer lace and polka dot sleeves allows a bride to cover up for a crisp Autumn day wedding whilst keeping a soft romantic feel and the light tulle skirt layers float dreamily in gentle autumnal breezes.

Bridal Hair by Vera K Hair
With a stunning mane of red flowing hair, Carly from Vera K Hair wanted to keep the Bride’s hair as soft and natural as possible, "I felt the hair was beautiful in itself, but added just a hint of interest at the back. I was working with a stunning flower crown made by Fuss Pots, and wanted to compliment this by keeping the hair quite soft. I created some natural waves and combined three fish tale plaits that entwined into each other.”

Carly has grown up in the hairdressing industry, as her mum trained with Toni and Guy and her dad with Vidal Sasson. When Carly was old enough she also trained with Toni and Guy and worked in their salon for many years. Carly now runs her own freelance hair business, specialising in her passion, bridal hair in the Devon area.
Makeup by Isabelle Grace Makeup Artistry
For the bridal makeup, Rachel owner of Isabelle Grace Makeup Artistry added warmth to make the Bride’s eyes pop whilst complimenting the rich autumnal tones incorporated in the flower crown. “Her lips were kept soft, a rich stain as opposed to a defined statement lip, and cheeks just a flush of colour, steering away from anything too current”.

Rachel is a fully qualified, freelance makeup artist with over 10 years experience, specialising in bridal makeup. Isabelle Grace is Rachel’s daughter, who was named after Grace Kelly, her make up inspiration! When Rachel was pregnant with Isabelle, working on brides wedding makeup, she realised how much she loved what she was doing and so had to pursue her profession further, and that where Isabelle Grace Makeup Artistry was born.

Bridesmaid Dress from Always & Forever Bridal, Bideford.
The bridesmaid’s dress was chosen to complement our inspired 'Autumn Love' sentiment. It is a beautifully soft wrap style with a flutter neck detail that flatters every shape, and keeps shoulders covered in those crisp autumnal breezes. The team chose the dark rich colour ‘Evergreen’ to compliment the styling and lush foliage. The dress is by Bill Levkoff (in Style no. 7112), and was supplied by Always & Forever Bridal. It is also available in 32 different colour shades easily suiting any season or theme.

Accessories
Always taking inspiration from the wild beauty of nature, the styling of this shoot at Westcott Barton were wonderfully inspiring for Gayle from Bee Lavish. “I found it allowed for a blend of styles and several different items for accessories and jewellery.
The bridesmaid wore gold jewellery that held a dark rich green moss agate pendant, tying into the deep green foliage, and her petite hair comb featuring ferns with tiny labradorite gems and pearls.
The Bride wore a bespoke gold and pearl necklace, with boho style fern hoop earrings, which mirrored the pearls and labradorite gems”.
Gayle from Bee Lavish is an artisan jewellery maker based in Devon, UK. Gayle specialises in hand making luxurious petite porcelain & jewellery, with all her designers having a strong connection with nature and the great outdoors, perfect if you are looking for unique pieces to accompany your wedding day look.
Picture
The Groom
Our Groom wore a classic Marc Darcy 3 piece suit, with handsome and natural, neutral colouring and a pop of earthy orange. This featured autumnal tones to compliment both the Groom himself, and the boho-rustic theme and wedding styling. The Marc Darcy suit was supplied by men’s fashion boutique, Suave Owl, an award winning independent menswear retailer based in Bath, UK.
The Ceremony
Nixie James-Scott was the Celebrant for this beautiful micro wedding. “It is fabulous to be part of such a great team for this rich, luscious autumnal shoot, celebrating love and beauty. I chose to include a Handfasting Ceremony, which also has a rich tradition in many cultures, plus the visual symbolism of joining couples together in their marriage. It always feels such a privilege to help couples create their own Unique Ceremony”, Nixie from Unique Ceremonies.

Picture
The Rings
Rings are very symbolic and so important in a wedding, so it was only fitting to ask The Molten Wedding Ring Co. to provide the shoot with the stunningly luxurious, ethical, and timeless wedding bands with a modern twist.
The Molten Wedding Ring Co. was founded by Erin Cox, a Jewellery Designer and Maker for the past 15 years The unique ‘molten’ design, started in 2005 with Erin’s signature collection, which came from playing with metal and pushing it to its limits while in its molten state, which has developed over the years of perfecting. The refine fluid molten texture features in all of Erin’s jewellery collections in silver, gold and platinum.

Styling
Katie from Best Day Ever Venue Styling & Event Planning designed and styled our seasonal shoot. For the wedding breakfast setting, table runners created a wonderfully natural, yet luxurious feel to the table setting, and these gently contrasted with the natural wood of the tables and chairs.
Gold cutlery and gold tea light holders were used to bring in luxurious elements and to reflect the warm tones of autumn colouring, along with gorgeous fresh apples.
Picture
Picture
To add ambience to The Barn dining area they also used candlelight, on the table setting and using Westcott’s own wall mounted candle sconces. This created all around soft lighting, warm luxury, and framed the top table in a unique way.
Outside our handmade arch framed the Bride, Groom and Celebrant with bohemian charm in front of the cosy sheep skin wrapped benches in the midst of Westcott’s beautiful gardens.
Picture
Whilst in the Orangery the glass of sparkling chandeliers nestled elegantly in the midst of their natural grape vine foliage leading the eye down to the feast of glorious colours of the sharing platters by Jax’s Cakes n Bakes, and the delicious, mouth-watering rustic themed Wedding Cake.

Macrame Detailing
Added layers of hurricane lanterns were used both inside and out, weaving the theme together alongside macrame from the talented Knot Again Jill. The whole setting was just perfect for a backdrop macrame, within the separate beautiful barn, simple style of the relaxed orangery and beautiful gardens.
"I created a large macrame hanging on a naturally weathered piece of local driftwood, which looked great in the barn, and we also used a table runner, macrame jars, and incorporated a small hanging for the table plan. The combination of these amazing suppliers working together created a truly special shoot that I am so proud to have been a part of!"
Picture
Florals
Small leafy green trees and peachy blooms styled within a mix of natural baskets and urns, gently swayed either side of Westcott Barton’s Barn Doors setting the theme inside The Barn itself. Hannah from Fuss Pots used a mix of beautiful ivy and twisted hazel were styled in long vines along the table runner, complemented by Best Day Ever’s styling of earthy brown vases, soft feathers and fresh apples from Westcott Barton’s own grounds.
Picture

A stunning blend of chrysanthemum, large bloom roses, grasses, orange fire thorn berries, dried bunny tail grasses and scabiosa pods, seasonal flowers, and foliage were used in the Bride and Bridesmaid’s bouquets, the Groom’s buttonhole and adorned both the celebration arch, and the Bride’s glorious floral crown. Even the confetti was hand picked, dried and lovingly made for this shoot. Rose, delphinium and lady’s mantle were the choice of confetti petal and the soft scents were perfect for the intimate garden ceremony.

Stationery
“Focusing on the rich autumnal colours of the flowers, venue and grounds as the starting point for this stationery suite, I wanted to capture a contemporary twist on the boho feel”, Emma from Emma Louise Castle Stationery. Using bold fonts, layouts and shapes whilst lending a more delicate hand to the watercolour foliage details.
The mixture of hand painted ferns were inspired by the beautiful gardens at Westcott Barton and complementing the ferns used in the jewellery pieces, and rich green of the bridesmaids dress”. Emma is an established designer of bespoke wedding stationery, creating personal and handmade wedding stationery alongside a variety of other design services.

Catering & Wedding Cake
"Sharing platters are right on trend and they are perfect for a socially distanced wedding. With each table bubble receiving their own platter, a mix of a savoury and dessert, or keeping them separate. Something for everyone, from cured meats & cheeses, to homemade brownies & doughnuts. For the cake, to keep with the rustic charm of the barn, I created a semi naked sponge with chocolate drips, macaroons and added fresh flowers from Fuss Pots .” Jax Curtis from Jax Cakes ‘n’ Bakes.
Jax started her business in 2014 creating bespoke celebration cakes and then later expanded to offer full catering services. Jackie takes pride in cooking the food herself and then has a team of fabulous waiting staff to serve you and your guests every need.
Beverages
The Fizzy Pheasant is a bar hire company rooted in the North Devon countryside and celebrating rural life, "the changing seasons are always incredibly inspiring for us. Being part of the 'Autumn Love' shoot, was an amazing opportunity to showcase our shaker bar in a beautiful barn setting, as well as to make some delicious cocktails with seasonal flavours and ingredients.
Picture
Picture
The 'pop up' shaker bar in its warm dove grey finish fitted perfectly with the autumnal tones and styling of the shoot, and sank into its stone barn surroundings as if it had always been there. Their Autumn cocktails fitted in perfectly with the spectacular grazing table and beautiful cake by Jax's cakes n bakes, creating a true autumnal celebration spread!
Picture
Picture
"We used blackberries, pears and fresh herbs bring the flavours of fall to life. During the day the elegant styling of the bar enhances and compliments any wedding space, and in the evening, the backlighting and cocktail shaking draws wedding guests over - and that's when the party can really get started!"

I am in LOVE with the colour palette for this uplifting elopement shoot sent into us here at The Boho Bride Guide by Kera Parkinson, a wedding planner and event hire company that loves all things boho styling.
Picture
Kera worked with Shelley Hartley, a fellow wedding stylist to create the concept for this shoot and pulled together a fabulous team of independent small business wedding suppliers from across Cornwall that have a passion for creating bohemian inspired wedding days.
Picture
The inspiration for the day was taken from the forthcoming change in seasons as we journey closer to the Autumnal Equinox on 22nd September 2020 and to provide intimate wedding inspiration to couples on their wedding planning journey.
Picture
The Ceremony
Now when we talk ‘boho inspired’ weddings, the scenery wouldn’t be complete without a macramé installation or 2! and Paulina from P.Line.Art did not disappoint! Look at this stunning full length ceremony macramé backdrop that effortlessly creates a tranquil space to declare your love for one another in front of close family and friends.

Picture
Floral Inspo
Kirsty from Escential Blooms worked her magic to create an organic mixed greenery and floral runner to decorate the celebration table to accent the earthy and organic colour palette styling. The bridal bouquet was big and bountiful and followed on the bohemian, free spirited theme using Ruscus and Eucalyptus as the greenery backdrop, then filled full of Roses, Spray Roses, Chrysanthemum Blooms, Pampas Grass and Opuntia Microdasys (Bunny Ears), all tied together with an uber stylish macramé wrap created by Paulina from P.Line.Art.

And what about those sugar flowers!! Stunning!! Each petal was individually crafted to perfection to create those sensational blooms that complete this edible delight, and to top it off the sugar flowers can be kept as a keepsakefrom your big day.
