Planning a Relaxed, Sustainable & Locally Sourced Wedding in the British Countryside - A Real Wedding Feature
We are absolutely delighted to feature the beautiful wedding of Ellie & Tim on The Boho Bride Guide Blog this week. The newlyweds got married at River Cottage HQ in Devon on 22nd July 2021 and what a magical day it was.
The styling inspiration for Ellie & Tim's wedding reflected the ethos of River Cottage, with food from the local area and the garden taking centre stage.
They wanted it to be relaxed and not too formal, so their guests could really enjoy themselves. There was a real focus on home grown and locally sourced goods adding a touch of sustainability to their wedding.
Where it all began
Ellie and Tim met online in April 2019. They clicked instantly and after a few dates it was clear they were meant to be together. Tim proposed up Machu Picchu on a once in a life time trip to Peru, a truly incredible and unforgettable experience.
How COVID affected their Wedding
Unfortunately, like many couples in 2020 and 2021, Ellie & Tim had to change the date of their wedding 3 times.
Ellie explained that postponing the first time was devastating as they felt they would never get the wedding they wanted. But actually their feelings about the wedding changed whilst waiting for their day to arrive.
Covid made the couple value their nearest and dearest even more so, and brought them closer together. They decided to keep their numbers small with only 40 people there on the day. This allowed them to spend time with everyone and made their time with family and friends even more expectional. They were even allowed to sing and dance with all their guests as Covid restrictions had completely eased.
We think that this will impact a lot of couples getting married in the future and make them re-think what really is important to them on their wedding day. Intimate and micro weddings may be a big thing for the future and we are all for it!
Special Touches with a focus on sustainability
There was a theme of trees and wood for this countryside wedding, and the tables were all named after British Trees.
Tim made the candleholders from locally sourced wood and each table had a flower arrangement centred on a log.
Local & Home Grown Wedding Food by River Cottage
Ellie loved the fact she could select a venue that showcased their ethos of home grown, locally sourced and produced food. They also designed their own personal menu with the chefs at River Cottage, including local Lyme Bay scallops, Lamb and all the veg was picked that day fresh from the River Cottage garden. Now, you can't get more local than that!
Dessert was a yummy Chocolate and Cider brandy ice cream, with fennel seed brittle.
Handmade Floral Wedding Cake
The beautiful floral inspired wedding cake was designed by Angel Chops Cakes, all of which are lovingly hand made by Laura, the owner, in Scrumptious Sidmouth.
Locally Grown Wedding Flowers
The flowers, were created by Ellie's mum and were all from her own garden or locally sourced. There was no fixed colour theme and they embraced what local flowers were available at the time.
We love the heavy floral focus of this wedding too, so natural and wildly romantic.
Sustainable Handmade Wedding Stationery
Laura Likes created the couples wedding invitations out of seed paper meaning they could be planted and grown by the guests. They were based around their wildflower, floral theme.
The couple also had a bespoke wedding newspaper made by Photopress UK, featuring photos, a crossword and the order of the day.
Vintage Bridal Dress and Handmade Touches
Ellie explained that she struggled to visit any bridal shops due to lockdown so she had to order something online. She ordered various dresses from John Lewis and tried them on at home with with her Mum, eventually finding her dress by Ghost with a vintage feel.
Ellie chose some Love from Hetty and Dave shoes to accompany her vintage bridal dress. Ellie opted for flats with an amazing Bowie themed Ziggy Stardust to match with her entrance song.
The bridesmaid dresses, bridal headpiece and bridal cape were all handmade by Ellie's very talented Mum.
Tim also made his tie clips from recycled cymbal. Amazing!
VW Vintage Camper for Event Hire
Little Red Bus Photobooth is a red VW camper and they provide amazing headdresses and props to take some truly memorable photos with your guests. Ellie and Tim said this was brilliant fun for their guests and the kids just adored it.
Natural & Relaxed Wedding Photography
Ellie praised her wedding photographer Laura from FreeForm Images Photography, stating that she was amazing from start to end and gave such a personal service. The photographs were absolutely perfect and we totally agree!
Laura is one of our fabulous UK approved suppliers and offers a bespoke service in a documentary style. Ellie added that Laura 'captured all our guests and wedding details perfectly.'
Special Wedding Day Moments
This is what Ellie had to say about the favourite parts of her wedding day.
'The ceremony was truly fabulous. I walked down the aisle to David Bowies “Heroes” and we stood in front of the iconic River Cottage in the blazing sunshine saying the vows we had written for each other.'
Ellie also added, 'Sitting down to eat the menu they designed with the chefs at River Cottage and seeing all the local food and garden vegetables on the plate, was all truly delicious!' This really reflected their ethos about eating locally and growing your own produce.
Dancing and singing with their friends to Bohemian Rhapsody after all being apart for so long, and taking selfies in the Little Red Bus Photo booth, was a perfect ending to a perfect wedding!
Congratulations Ellie and Tim!
We hope you have enjoyed reading this post on Ellie and Tim's relaxed, sustainable Wedding.
Thank you so much Ellie & Tim for sharing your sensational and sustainable wedding day with us!
Lot's of Love,
We are super excited to welcome our fabulous approved supplier Bryony from Pretty Vintage Hire, and the team to the Be More Boho Blog. Bryony will be sharing the stunning images from her 'Textured Boho Luxe' inspired shoot at the beautiful Swancar Farm Country House. The inspiration behind this shoot was the venue itself and its Glass Barn, with its beautiful wooden frame. This called for something complimenting; soft, textured and sophisticated with a bohemian touch.
'The vibe was chilled and the images were peaceful, light, cosy and full of love.'
Swancar Farm Country House is a beautiful period country house set in the rural countryside of Trowell, Nottinghamshire. They offer exclusive use of the whole venue with numerous celebration areas to choose from throughout your day. From the Oak Hall, Courtyard and Old Stables, through to the show stopper Glass Barn that we chose to set up the ceremony space.
Abby from In The Name Of Love Bridal kindly let us take Amy to try on, originally what was going to be a jumpsuit, in her stylish bridal studio, however we fell in love with the texture of this dress and how captivating Amy was when she wore it.
Abby provides unique bridal pieces which was so refreshing, and the cape which Amy wore for part of the shoot and outdoors added that extra wow factor.
MUA & Hair
Sam from Life of a Beauty Girl, was so welcoming and brilliant to work with creatively. She gave Amy a natural look with a dewy glow to compliment her already pretty face who doesn’t wear a lot of makeup anyway.
Kellie from Kellie Straw hair and Beauty kept Amy’s long blonde hair around her face, and added effortless curls and a twist detail to the back and around the twig crown.
I love to create beautiful and emotive settings that give those 'feels'. This editorial shoot was all about using a depth of textures and tonal hues, without a colour pop. I loved using our dark oak backdrop structure to match the venue’s chairs, and added lots of different materials to layer and add interest to the eye; cheesecloth, Egyptian cotton, voile and lace for a dreamy look, and carried this on with scrim chair ties and demijohns with just a few stems of soft grey pampas.
I have a love of bamboo and as my collection builds, I used just two armchairs with soft grey fur for those couple backdrop images and a cow skin rug for even more texture and depth. The top table mirrored the backdrop style with a new wooden triangle backdrop for simplicity in contrast to this with vintage brass candlesticks and detailed glass decanters.
Tablescape - Bryony
I set up the table using the drapes from the previous backdrop to carry on the theme however replaced the backdrop with a two piece triangle, signifying manifestation and enlightenment, the perfect shape for a wedding. It also provided a softer backdrop.
Catherine from Inspired Foristry is just wonderful. Always ready to create something different like the delicate twig floral crown resembling the antlers throughout the venue itself. Bringing along the perfect prop for the tall floral arrangement for the archway which made it completely independent and the wonderful displays in front of the table. The bouquet mirrored the shape of the cake with a square nest made again from twigs.
Natalie from @cakes.bynatalie is queen of stencils on her cakes and she did not disappoint with a wonderful floral design. We went for a square cake for something different with a nude palette and she added some flower stems from Inspired Floristy to bring everything together. She also brought us all delicious cupcakes on the day which were delish!!
I asked Sally from I Do Invites for simple and elegantly textured stationery to match the mood board and colours and she didn't disappoint! Sally designed and created the stunning wedding stationery embellished with real pressed flowers and finished off with a real flowers with a clear wax seal, just stunning!
Sarita White Photography has an amazing flare for capturing all the little details before you have even asked her to and then some! She has a wonderful eye and creative side herself, and always inspiring and full of ideas when planning the shoot. We always get so excited together on the run up to and on the shoot itself.
Lots of love,

You are in for a treat today! With this stunning Bohemian Gardens inspired shoot at the magnificent 13th Century Maunsel Manor House hidden amongst the Somerset countryside.
At Peony and Lace Weddings you get a wedding bestie in your pocket. My mission is to help couples enjoy the exciting journey that is wedding planning. To be there to hold their hand when needed, to listen to their ideas and help weave them into a cohesive plan and to reassure them that everything will go without a hitch on the big day!
'The idea for the shoot came from an image of an alfresco dining set up shared by Jen on The Boho Bride Guide Instagram Handle.
The colour palette was inspired by the sensational head dress by Clare Lloyd Accessories. I knew that I wanted to use the head dress and built the colour palette around the orange and mint ribbons of the accessory. I added in a paler peach, charcoal grey and accents of gold to complement the coral and mint'.
Once again inspired by florals and natural forms, Di Hassall’s new collection is a fusion of textures and colour. Simple, well-cut shoe shapes, in butter-soft pastel-coloured suedes, are the blank canvas for Di’s gorgeous embroidered hand-sewn embellishments using a combination of colourful embroidery, silk ribbon work and diamanté encrusted detail.
Creating beautiful bridal accessories and jewellery for women to wear on the most special and memorable day of their lives is such a privilege and joy for Claire and she feels very lucky to be able to be a little part of so many happy memories.
All of Claire's headpieces are meticulously made by hand by me using old fashioned couture techniques. Working from her light filled studio in Frome, Somerset in the English countryside - she now delivers to brides worldwide.
Positioned within the Victorian walled garden and cushioned alongside a traditional apple orchard is the pergola, a picturesque hidden gem perfect for weddings and celebrations. Nestled amongst an idyllic beautiful English country garden full of fragrant English roses, scented jasmine, and honeysuckle, the pergola offers those wishing for an ultra-laid back affair. The perfect outdoor ceremony space for up to 170 loved ones.
Inspired by their natural surroundings, Justin Duance is best known for their rustic and unique wedding and engagement rings. The pieces in this shoot are cast in beach sand, the sand creates a lovely subtle texture and tiny grains are captured in the gold. Choosing your own sand for casting is a lovely way of personalising your rings. The engagement ring features cluster of fully traced Australian brown diamonds which twinkle beautifully.
Edible rose petal heart lollies are perfect to add luxury and glamour to your wedding or event. The delicate dried rose petals give off a delicate flavour and smell. This is really romantic making the perfect unique wedding favour or gift.
The aim for the hanging cloud was to create a stunning focal piece to adorn the alfresco dining table. Sarah used a mix of dried grasses flowers and seed heads, including diverse shapes and textures to create layers of interest which she accentuated with fresh coral charm peonies, quick sand roses to add that luxe romantic element and fresh grasses to add some movement.
Sarah used a mixture of pampas grass, allium seed heads, dried hydrangea, wheat grasses bunnies tail, honesty reed grasses and fresh coral charm peonies, quick sand roses and fresh grasses.
She uses natural light, no flash, and loves capturing the moment as it happens. Laura is a force of nature on an editorial shoot, working tirelessly to get that perfect shot at every point throughout the day. She loves participating in styled shoots as they enable her to let her creatively run wild and work with amazing like minded people.
My Wedding Godmother is a Bridal Wellbeing Service, helping brides feel calm, clear and focused in the build up to their wedding day and into newlywed life.
Sally said, 'With my support, they arrive at their wedding looking and feeling fabulous, with all their nerves and worries behind them'.
I hope you enjoyed browsing through our Bohemian Gardens wedding editorial as much as I enjoyed creating it with this sensational team!

We are thrilled to welcome the amazing Laura Farmer from Freeformimages Photography to the Be More Boho Blog. Laura is a wedding & elopement photographer based in Devon, and one of our Approved Suppliers on The Guide Directory Subscription.
Laura will be sharing her Eco Luxe Wedding Inspiration Shoot with us, which was shot at the beautiful River Cottage, nestled in a picturesque valley on the Devon - Dorset border, UK, surrounded by rolling fields and stunning scenery. Sounds perfect!
A wedding at River Cottage will always inspire and enchant. Surrounded by rolling fields and beautiful countryside, River Cottage is the perfect backdrop for a wedding. Couples can say "I do," in the famous farmhouse or the walled kitchen garden, or the beautifully restored Threshing Barn. River Cottage really is the perfect setting for an unforgettable wedding.
"Creating an Eco wedding with a luxury twist was at the heart of this shoot and was coordinated in harmony with the venue and suppliers involved."
Bridal Bell Tent
Native Bell Tent Hire aimS to be as green thinking as possible. ”We choose high quality, long-lasting bell tents made from sustainably sourced cotton. Our canvas tents are arguably more eco-friendly than the modern nylon tents".
The Bride had a selection of 3 dresses within this editorial. 'The Beach Dress' made by Luna Bride , is available at The Conscious Bride, made from organic silk, bamboo and French lace all of which is handmade in the UK.
The 'Meraki' two piece made by The Conscious Bride 'Own Label,' is created from vintage broderie anglaise. Hannah says, “I wanted to create something from cotton that had form and structure. So many wedding dresses are in silk and I wanted to find away to utilise beautiful vintage cottons and still create a wedding dress that was comfortable and striking.”
And finally a bespoke heirloom silk gown made by The Conscious Bride 'Own Label.' “This dress was created specially with this shoot in mind. The lace on the top was purchased from a fair a few years ago and I had been hanging onto it for something special. Teamed with this hand loomed fair trade silk from Cambodia it is a dress that keeps traditional technique and skill alive. Lined with non bleached bamboo (from a closed loop system). It's still all about stunning and slightly daring backs, and because the lace was only a small piece it influence the design.”
Hair and Make-up
The make up products used were also environmentally friendly, zero waste, recyclable, carbon neutral, sustainably sourced ingredients, non - toxic, non GMO, vegan, cruelty free and gave a flawless look. Michelle Stanford Makeup Artist gave the model a look that was inspired by the colours used in the shoot, so a smokey look, with some coral and gold added to the mix. With a beautiful coral lipstick to finish.
The hair by The Up do Girl was a soft; natural textured looking hairstyle “I felt would suit the brief and the beautiful countryside venue location”. The hair products used are a brand called Maria Nila, their products are vegan and cruelty free, they use climate compensated packaging, working with Zeromission and Plant Vivo which helps farmers plant trees in poorer parts of the world for reforestation.”
Even the headpiece by Hey Jules Bridal Accessories was up-cycled and re-worked the elements. “I managed to find some gorgeous 1940’s vintage fabric millinery flowers from a local vintage shop, which I used as part of the main headpiece along with some beautiful blush vintage pearls and other antique beads. I love the 3D effect and the softness of the pearl sprays and glass leaves. The gold and lavender crown contains the most beautiful vintage brooch that had been in my collection for a number of years just waiting to be used in something special! The soft colours and organic structure were perfect for the River Cottage theme.”
The Groom wore a selection of Cock & Bull Tweed Collection’s handsome and colourful tweed waistcoats and caps accompanied by a classic hemp long sleeve shirt and organic chino trousers. 'Using the finest hand-woven tweeds from the Isle of Lewis, paired with organic hemp/silk linings enable us o provide excellent quality and sustainable style. Even the bow ties from Patore’UK are lovingly created from solid wood, the grain ensures no two are alike. To complete his look were unconventional sophisticated men’s shoes from Bourgeois Boheme, providing ethically made, sustainable, vegan shoes with a literal minimal footprint.
Using natural fabrics hand dyed with natural pigments Vicky from Do me A favour, added the colour tones of coral from the brief. These elements flowed out from the foliage of greenery table runners, creating a wonderful natural, but sumptuous feel to the tables. Slate chargers gave depth and contrast to the wooden tables and we used gold cutlery and gold tea light holders to bring more of a luxury feel to the decor.
To give the stunning Threshing Barn Dining Area an extra dimension, Petal and Posie Floristry hung many macramé plant hangers with beautiful plant holders filled with gorgeous seasonal flora’s such as Tulips, Narcissi, Hellebores and lots of foliage for a lush, green 'just gathered' spring look. This created a ceiling of natural luxury and framed the top table in a unique way.
Claires Sweet Temptations a luxury cake designer covering the South West UK, created this show stopper of a wedding cake. Bringing in the metallic accents from the table styling, to blend into the fresh elegant feel of this shoot, whilst at the same time having a hint of luxury.
Everything about River Cottage chimes from the stunning surroundings to the ethically sourced food. “As a Celebrant my main creativity is through my words; however for the shoot I used my old favourite wooden lectern and created a beautiful hand fasting cord plaiting together all natural cotton and linen ribbons and cords…adding feathers too.
Lastly I made a Besom style broom; from a hazel stave and dogwood twigs wrapped round with sisal and linen ribbons, for our delightful bride and groom to jump over into their new married life together!" Nixie from Unique Ceremonies for Heartfelt Weddings with Soul!
The rings are symbolic and so important in a wedding so it was only fitting to ask Eco Wood Rings to provide us with the stunning wedding bands. "You have a unique opportunity when you choose a custom eco wood ring to create something truly meaningful.
Most of our customers use their wooden rings as an opportunity to tell their unique story. You can add in materials from special places including wood from the River Cottage HQ or a treasured possession.
The confetti supplied by Keslowena Confetti, was hand picked and lovingly made for this shoot. Hops, delphinium and lady’s mantle were the choice of petal and the soft scents were perfect for the Cottage Garden ceremony.

In the middle of a global pandemic, I really wanted our elopement shoot to show that love is love, and whether you’re getting married in a grand manor hotel or the back garden that the results are the same; a couple who tied the knot! I believe that elopements and intimate weddings could be the future of the wedding industry, and I think more couples will be choosing to have a mini celebration just the two of them, leaving the proper knees up with all their loved ones for a later date.
The name One Love was inspired by the amazing ‘Coral Heart’ street art created by @louismasai which use to be on the graffiti wall by Tooting Market. The ‘Coral Heart’ was a part of his ‘save the coral reef’ series, still present on the walls of many countries. He signs all his artwork with ‘One Love’. The Hullabaloo Collective passionately stands for love for all, regardless of background, gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation, so it only seemed appropriate to give this shoot the same name. Celebrating diversity means everything to me. After all, I live in diversely rich South London that I love so much.
I wanted to show that Boho doesn’t necessarily have to be whimsical or festival/barn in style, but can fit right in within an urban setting. Featuring a beautiful sequin bridal gown as well as a two-piece balloon sleeve blouse with wide palazzo pants by the one and only Poppy Perspective, and beautiful headpieces by The Lucky 6 Pence, the styling reflects the cool modern boho.
I wanted to create an intimate courtyard celebration for two at the Goldfinch, my little local cocktail bar in Tooting. All the props were mine or apart from the bar’s tables. A true DIY style, for the true impromptu elopement celebration for two. I created a sweetheart table with a couple of peacock chairs, retro rya rugs, a vintage fringed tablecloth, retro glassware, and crockery, underneath a suspended floral installation. It was meant to be simple, intimate, and cute, yet stylish.
We also took some great shots along Tooting High Street, giving the shoot that urban feel.
I wanted these to reflect the spur of the moment fun elopement. Capturing little details of the day, the true love for adventure, showing that it doesn’t matter where you tie the knot as long as it has meaning and memories dear to you both – like the little cocktail bar where you had your first date. Jay & Lex are fellow Wedding Breakfast Club members and it was so nice to work with creatives who feel the same way about smaller weddings and the future of our industry.

Initially, the editorial shoot was conceived to gain images of the woodlands as a new wedding venue. Beth (Underpine Woods owner) and Cassie (Bude Blooms) wanted to capture the beauty and wonder of the venue, so enlisted Sara at Peony & Lace Weddings to come on board to style and plan the shoot.
Sara explained, "The first time I visited the woodlands I was in awe of its natural beauty. 27 expansive acres of spruce trees, a babbling river and the endless possibility of styling".
Sara wanted to highlight the natural beauty of the woodlands, so she used a colour palette of bottle green, metallic gold and white. Mixing festoon lighting, candles and macrame pieces, the team styled the woodlands to create a rustic, bohemian fairytale affair.
Venue – Underpine Woods, Bude, Cornwall.
Underpine Woods is a 27 Acre sustainably managed ex-plantation woodland just outside of Bude in Cornwall. Originally planted in the 1970’s the woods as a plantation crop, it is now being transformed by Beth and Sam the owners, into a beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.
Veil - Rebecca Anne Designs
To finish the look, Rebecca, from Rebecca Anne Designs provided one of her beautiful veils. “To complement the venue, I felt a veil with embroidered wildflowers would perfectly suit the wilderness of the surroundings and the locally grown flowers being used for the shoot.”
Jewellery – Bish Bosh Becca
As soon as the dress was secured, it was straight over to Sarah Jane at Bish Bosh Becca for the jewellery. “It’s always a pleasure to work with Sara and when she mentioned a magical woodland shoot I was hooked. I am at my most creative when designing jewellery for shoots, just like a real wedding I have to be aware of the theme and the dress".
The Celebrant Ceremony - Unique Ceremonies
Nixie James Scott of Unique Ceremonies, provided a hand fasting ceremony for the shoot. Nixie has been known in the past to remark that she can marry couples anywhere, including up a tree. Of course, it was this comment that led to her being asked to join the team!
The ceremony was such a beautiful and moving affair that it led our model Bekki to cry tears of pure joy and happiness.
Wedding Rings – Eco Wood Rings
As the woodland is an eco friendly wedding venue, who better to partner up with than Eco Wood Rings for the wedding bands. For Bekki’s ring, Steve provided a ring made from oak with an inlay of white gold shavings and diamond dust. For Brad’s band, a strong and simplistic band of oak was supplied.
Hair/ MUA – Toni Gogola Wedding Hair
For a free spirited, boho hairstyle, the obvious addition to the team was Toni Gogola at Toni Gogola Wedding Hair. “I specialise in laid back natural braided hairstyles so when I was asked to be involved with the woodland shoot I was so excited! Bekki has the most gorgeous striking purple hair and I knew exactly how I wanted it to look. I decided soft waves with a twisted top section knowing it would fit perfectly amongst the stunning backdrop of Underpine Woods.”
“When I first saw the woodlands with Cassie and Beth, I knew straight away that a table runner of greenery accented with white flowers would be the perfect décor for the table. Candles always feature in my work, so the addition of white glass votives and white tapered candles in gold holders was a must to accompany the foliage.”
Stationery – Boo Lou Lew Design
Beth is not only the owner of the woodlands, she runs Boo Lou Lew Design. The stationary she created was inspired by the idea that any couple can create something completely unique, beautiful and sustainable whilst supporting local artists and having fun too!
Beth carved a custom stamp and combined it with an online calligraphy course and beginners set from the wonderful Langham Calligraphy and a choice from a wide range of beautiful ethical papers from Torn Edge Paper. Delicate, hand crafted gold edging adorned the invites.
